Jessy's Reflection

This is the book which kicked off the series. I first heard about how James didn't steal a ship while doing some Australian history research. After Terri had designed the illustrations, my mother and I went to Norfolk Island on vacation. It struck me just how similar the old buildings there looked to how Terri had depicted them in the book.

Upon learning that the Norfolk Islanders had their own language, I thought it would be a nice touch to include it in the book. But, after trying several times, I was unfortunately unable to find anyone with the free time and experience necessary to translate it. Then it occurred to me how we'd been told that the Norfolk Islanders brought their language over there from Pitcairn Island. So I figured I might as well try to find someone from there instead. After two years of searching, it only took a couple of weeks to find Meralda. She was a wonderful help and quite an interesting lady to work with too.

From there, the series finally began to bud and grow. Thanks for the inspiration Mum!
