Stories about African explorers like Dr Livingstone are well known. But how many South American explorers can you name? Perhaps it is our Anglo-centric view of the world but I learnt almost nothing about the continent in school. All I knew was that the Spanish had colonised most of it looking for gold.

Percy's story struck me both for its oddity and its mystery. There are so many unknowns. Aundre played upon this idea by making the imagery almost entirely devoid of human figures. Instead, we're presented with momentous scenes of untamed jungle graced only occassionally by a bridge, a path or a light. The viewer is invented into each picture as though he were standing there alongside the expedition.

As the first of the Brazilian stories in the series, I decided to make it available in Brazilian Portuguese in order to reach a wider audience. However, not wanting to ignore the plight of local communities, I've also released another edition in an Indigenous language which may serve a greater purpose within Brazil itself.
