Jessy's Reflection
When it comes to Africa, the plight of the Afrikaner people is often forgotten. Descendants of Dutch colonists who settled in remote, uninhabited parts of southern Africa, history would see their lands fall to the expanding British Empire. Not wanting to be absorbed, lest they lose their own culture, a large number of the Afrikaners moved to where they hoped they could be free. But it was not an easy journey.
Scholars debate whether the Rachel of this story really existed or whether hers was just a tale told to remember the hardship of those years. Yet in the hearts of the Afrikaner people, her name lives on strong with no doubt she paid the ultimate price for her love of her little brother.
While I was looking for a translator for this story, a friend introduced me to an online platform from which I've subsequently benefited greatly. Not everyone is open to exploring new horizons but I believe it's ourselves whom we limit and artificially entrap when fear of what's out there keeps us from wandering too far from home.
