Jessy's Reflection
With the amount it snows in Scandinavia, I wondered how any illustrator could cope with this story. That's why I chose to make it a colouring book. In hindsight, I think it worked well because colouring gives readers time to reflect upon the story. Since releasing this title, I've subsequently released a few more colouring books where I thought the use of line art would be appropriate.
This story was originally inspired by a discussion with Issachar Saberhagen. He had just started making notes for a book set in Eastern Europe where he'd concocted this backstory about the main character being a descendant of Jon Jarl. I asked if I could borrow part of his idea and thus this book was born! Last I knew, Issy is still working on his.
Not long after this title was released, I was approached by another script (i.e. writing system) enthusiast who asked if I could produce an edition of this title in runes. I said, to do that, I'd first have to have it translated into Old Norse. Finding anyone willing and able to do that was a feat in itself. Every Swedish academic I asked either laughed, refused or just plain ignored me. It wasn't until I tried asking Norwegians that I finally found someone ready to name his price. So now, after three long years in the making, a runic edition of this title might just be released in 2025!
