Jessy's Reflection
How many children know the agony of being falsely accused? How many a sibling has tried to get out of trouble by blaming someone else? How many an only child has feigned innocence when it couldn't have been anyone else? This book's title alone is something every child can relate to.
Retelling sad tales can be disheartening. So why do it? After all, almost everyone likes Cinderella more than Icarus. Yet there is a certain value in the negative that is lacking in the positive. If all your life has only ever been sunshine and rainbows, how could you understand the beauty of pounding rain tabering on a tin roof on a pitch black night?
Without modern conveniences like electricity, where would an author like me be? It's raining on the Rock tonight in the Outback and the landlord was over earlier today to check out why the power keeps tripping. My life may be much easier than Haruli's, but we all still have our own problems. It's stories like this one that give us hope in spite of them.
