Jessy's Reflection
When my old school called (around the start of the first lockdown) to tell me our reunion had been indefinately postponed, I was disheartened. However, while talking with the man on the phone, I mentioned how I was always looking for illustrators. He said there may be a student in the high school who could assist. I figured he meant someone in grade 11 or 12 (seniors). You can imagine my surprise when I discovered Lily was in grade 7.
I spoke with a trusted friend about whether or not I should proceed. She said it could be a good opportunity and that I shouldn't deny Lily that simply because of her youth. In spite of critics disparaging her abilities, I'm glad I hired Lily. The innocent beauty her style brought to this project reminds me of my childhood days playing in Hana's backyard and sliding on the rug on the polished wooden floor when her mum wasn't looking. Their house always looked perfect, until it didn't.
Often all we see in life is what we look for. If you're looking for goodness, what you see will be good. If you're looking to find fault, it will always be there. Was William wrong in the way he lived his life? That's for you to judge just as much as you might judge this book.
