Jessy's Reflection
Delays unfortunately caused this book to be released just too late to be featured at a festival the translator attended in India. Nonetheless, I remain most grateful to Manorama Jha for her efforts to have its cover displayed in spite of copies not having arrived in time. It was her idea to produce two editions of this book - one in English and Maithili, the other in Hindi and Maithili's traditional Mithilakshar (Tirhuta) script.
With both of us having experience in education, this story couldn't help but remind us of certain past students of our own. Every experienced teacher knows that quiet student whose hidden intelligence has to be drawn out wisely and delicately.
One of my favourite parts of this book is how Gangesha's parents trusted him to find his own way to his new school. Children learn so much by exploring on their own yet today, fewer and fewer parents are allowing them that opportunity. If that trend isn't reversed, I fear what our world may lose.
